MEET THE MAKER | Petria Field of Coco Rose Interiors
Beautiful spaces breed beautiful work. Especially when those space are filled with divinely crafted, handmade pieces like the stunning Indonesian furniture and homewares sourced by the creative genius behind Coco Rose Interiors, Petria Field.
Petria has a fantastic eye for great design and a heart of gold that leads her to select only ethically sourced pieces that are handcrafted from sustainable materials. Her creativity and vision for a brighter, kinder future is a inspiration.
How did you get started?
My husband and I moved our family over to Indonesia in 2016. Whilst there, we were so inspired by the beautiful handcrafted pieces we found there. We also became really conscious of the environmental impact we all have on our Earth, through the amounts of plastic waste and rare timber furnitures we saw being used in Indonesia.
After a year’s exploration of the island we hand selected some local artisans that made beautiful pieces with ethically sourced and sustainable materials. We wanted to reduce the mass consumption we witnessed and bring a message of sustainable living to Australia.
We continue to do this by sourcing from local Indonesian craftsmen who have ethical business practices and produce their products in a sustainable manner whilst demonstrating how to design your home and live your life in a more eco-friendly way.
You will see our room and product designs have very earthy tones and styles with lots of natural plants and greenery. We find the tropical imagery we convey to our customers depicts the relaxed island life we were so inspired by and aligns perfectly with our holistic message of minimising waste and living in a more sustainable way.
What does a usual day look like to you?
I am a wife and mother of 3 young girls with a fourth baby due early next year. No two days are the same but as you can imagine always guaranteed to be busy!
I have focused a lot more on my own overall well-being lately and have found it has had really positive flow on effects through to the message we are sending to our customers. I wake up early to fit in what I can with work before the girls wake up. The day is devoted to them while I am with them. I set myself a curfew at night and put aside relaxation time each day.
In between I am constantly collaborating with amazing women in business, networking and self educating to improve every facet of my business.
Handmade aligns with our business mantra of only using what you need. We encourage people to buy handmade as it reduces the mass-consumption of fast furniture products that have a short lifespan. By purchasing handmade you are ensuring longevity in high quality products. Our furniture is sourced from businesses that handcraft each product as we order them and not from stockpiled warehouses.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
Because we source from local Indonesian artisans, some of the families we know on a personal level from our time in Indonesia. We feel immense satisfaction that we are helping promote ethical business practices in a country that sees some very poor standards. We feel good knowing that our business is improving the lives of good decent local families.
What projects are you working on right now?
We have just released our fully interactive Eco-friendly Christmas Guide. Our guide comes with an eco-friendly Christmas checklist and clickable products that take you straight to amazing eco-thoughtful businesses that are really making a difference. We intend on making this an annual release to help send our message of sustainable living during a time that sees a lot of over consumption.
We are also really proud of our incredible all Brisbane women collaboration featuring five of Brisbane’s best interior designers. We have been featured in several publications all of which you can see on our press page.
That sounds amazing! I will definitely be grabbing a copy of that for myself! What are your goals for the future?
We want to to be the leading Australian bohemian based decor business in Australia, delivering a holistic approach to sustainable living. As we grow we are committed to improving our sustainable business practices and stay true to our mantra of encouraging less consumption.
What is something that you couldn't live without?
Oh coffee! How else does the day move forward?
