MEET THE MAKER | The Big Design Market Melbourne

The Big Design Market is one of my favourite events of the summer. Brimming with talented designers, makers and creatives of all kinds, this market pops up at the stunning Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton just before Christmas so that you can impress your friends and families with handmade, thoughtful gifts without them ever suspecting that you are a tad disorganised!

Set in one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions, Big Design Market impresses from start to finish; from chai to ceramics, clothing to build-your-own cameras, it really does have something for everyone.

If you had the misfortune of not making it to the Big Design Market this time around, don’t worry because I have curated my top picks for you right here so that you can browse the beautiful creations of some of my favourite designers at the market from the comfort of your very own sofa.

Togetherness Design

A long time design crush of mine, I was over the moon to spot Togetherness Design among this year’s stall holders. The creative work of colour enthusiast and beautiful human being,

Esther Sandler, this textile and design studio never fails to churn out beautifully fluid, loosely painted designs in a vivid colour palette. I noticed that this talented lady has also branched out in ceramics recently and I am already obsessed!

Kingston Jewellery

A new addition to my Instagram feed, this stunning jewellery brand caught my eye within minutes of entering the Big Design Market. It is fresh, fun and fabulously vibrant! These handmade jewellery pieces are designed and created in Victoria by the crazy talented owner, Jemima Kingston, and are all individually hand-painted making each one entirely unique and personal. “Hand-painting my designs makes for such a fun creative process and I love that no piece is ever the same as the last.”

Hello Miss May

This talented lass has so much creativity up her dinky little sleeves! Having followed her creations (and food adventures) on Instagram for as long as I can remember, I was delighted to finally see her at a market! Her pieces are bright and fun, and such a joy to look at. “Inspired by everyday living, I draw from my heart. My illustrations are then turned into beautiful artwork, lapel pins, wooden brooches and greeting cards.” May’s pieces are definitely from the heart and 100% speak to mine.

Samantha Robinson Ceramics

If you know me well enough, you know that I am a huge fan of handmade ceramics and that I have a minor obsession with botanicals. Ceramic artist and creative genius, Samantha Robinson, has cleverly woven these two passions of mine together to create some beautiful botanical pieces. And as if that wasn’t amazing enough, she went and filled them with the most divine smelling candles. That’s right folks. Handmade, botanical inspired, ceramic candles. Yes, my heart skipped a beat too.

Dana Kinter Art & Design

This talented lady is also a new find for me and I am so so glad I got to see her beautiful work. There’s isn’t a medium that this creative cannot master. With a portfolio filled with ceramics, paintings, textiles, dog bowls and everything you can possibly think of in between, Dana’s delicate style won me over from the outset.
